Selwyn Romilly, Selwyn was part of the vibrant Trini expat community at#UBCalongside my father (seen in this picture from their UBC days). Like many immigrants, they both came to UBC and to Canada seeking education—and opportunities—not available at home. They supported and encouraged each other on to countless successes, including Judge—and later Justice—Romilly’s indelible 40+ years on the bench. A Celebration of Life honouring Selwyn is on Saturday, October 28th and is open to all. I look forward to seeing so many of the people he impacted, influenced, and inspired from the Black community to the legal community and beyond, come together to join his family and loved ones to pay tribute to and celebrate his remarkable life. I’m thankful for the students’ thoughtfulness and openness, and for the chance to facilitate conversations about racial equality and the law. Canadian law schools rarely offer a whole course on this rich topic and so I’m especially grateful to be given this opportunity byHenry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law — University of Toronto.
