Cassels was born inQuebec City, the son of the banker and businessman Robert Cassels. He was educated atQuebec High Schooland theUniversity of Toronto, graduating with a BA in 1865. He wascalled to the BarinOntarioin 1869, and practiced atBlake, Lash, Cassels. He became aQueen's Counselin 1883.
